IWF World Cup: Bindyarani Devi wins bronze in total weight, silver in clean and jerk
The Indian weightlifter, however, is not in contention to make the cut for the Paris Olympics

Indian weightlifter and Commonwealth Games medalist Bindyrani Devi won the bronze medal at the ongoing IWF World Cup in Phuket, Thailand, on Tuesday. Competing in the 55kg class, the 25-year-old Indian lifted a total of 196 kg (83 kg snatch + 113 kg clean and jerk) to win the bronze medal.
As is the case in Continental Championships, World Cups and World Championships, Bindyarani Devi won a silver medal for her 113 kg effort in clean and jerk. Medals in these events are separately awarded for snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift.
Kang Hyon Gyong of North Korea won the gold medal after lifting 234 kg (103 kg + 131 kg) while Cambei Mihaela-Valentina of Romania won the silver medal when she lifted a total of 201 kg (91 kg + 110 kg). The effort is Mihaela-Valentina’s personal best.
Bindyarani Devi’s effort of 196 kg was just shy of her Birmingham Commonwealth Games total of 203 kg. The Indian lifter won the silver medal at the CWG in 2022.
The gulf in total weight between the gold and bronze medalists was huge, with the Indian managing to lift 38 kg less than the gold medalist.
As the Indian is competing in the non-Olympic 55 kg class and is currently ranked 29th in the 59kg Olympic Qualification Ranking, she is out of contention for the Paris Olympics. Only the top-10 in each weight category will get a ticket to compete in the quadrennial games. The Indian did make a switch to the 59 kg category at the 2022 World Championships but did not have a memorable outing as she finished 25th. She switched back to the 55 kg category post the Worlds and won a silver medal in the Asian Championships.
